It is very difficult for me to attempt to put into words what a lifetime of depression is like. There are countless days of struggle, weariness, darkness, hopelessness, isolation, anxiety and so many other aspects that make life unbearable at times. After a challenging week ending with a Saturday evening filled with great sadness and anxiety it was a blessing to be encouraged by the kindness of a dear friend today.

This evening I went outside with the kids for a little while. While outside I looked at the dry, cracked patches of dirt on top of the grass in our yard. Over the winter the wind blew so hard that it drifted the snow and then covered the snow drifts with dirt. The snow drifts were covered in mud while the snow melted and now that it is gone the dirt is crusted in patches over the grass in our yard. The dirt is very unattractive. The sight of green grass would be much more appealing. When I walked closer to the dry, crusted dirt I noticed that little, tiny pieces of green grass were growing up through the dirt. It was not a pretty sight, but the reality of it reminded me of the hope God gives us. For me it was a symbol of the darkness I had endured and the hope God had given today through the love and encouragement of a friend.  I was so hopeless the day before, but God allowed hope to start growing. I am thankful that I am growing in God's hope.

Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this:

The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”

For no one is abandoned by the Lord forever.
Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion
because of the greatness of his unfailing love.
For he does not enjoy hurting people or causing them sorrow.

~Lamentations 3: 21-24, 31-33

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

~Psalm 34:18

What's this all about??

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
~1 Thessalonians 5:18

I have noticed several friends that daily list something they are thankful for during the days leading up to Thanksgiving. This gave me the idea to start a collection of pictures that reflect things that I am thankful for. This will be a simple project with no guidelines or "rules"...I will post pictures as frequently as it is possible for me to do so and am allowing myself to use pictures I have taken in the past or take new pictures. This is not just a "Thanksgiving thing" that I will quit on November 23--this is something I will continue to do all year long. The main idea behind this is to keep the photography side of this simple and focus more on the heart--applying 1 Thessalonians 5:18 and having a true spirit of thankfulness for all God has done for me and blessed me with.
