| thankful in all circumstances | :Thanksgiving = Peace and Hope:

November 29, 2014  •  1 Comment

It often seems that these |thankful in all circumstances| posts come to my mind either during or right after a very difficult time. Like this week. Most of this week was filled with so much grief and depression that the simple task of getting out of bed in the morning was incredibly difficult and not something I was able to do in my own strength. It was a violent internal fight just to make it through each day. And by the middle of the day I would be so exhausted that I would have to take time to rest. While I am ashamed to admit this, there were even moments that I wished I could die because the pain seemed too strong.

On days like this it's very important for me to practice giving thanks to God as much as I can. When I think about it, I have so much to be thankful for. The most important is a relationship with Jesus Christ and the many other blessings that come from that. Our family never goes hungry and we have all our basic needs met. This is a lot more than many people around the world have. In addition to all of this I have a family that I get to spend each day with. My husband is slowly dying, but I can be thankful that he is at home with our family. We also have two vehicles. They may not be as fancy as what some people drive. The newest one is nearly a decade old, but they are both reliable and get us where we need to go. I can even be thankful that our vehicles are older--because of that we own them and do not have to be concerned about making monthly payments in order to keep them. And there's always God's beautiful creation to be thankful for. So many beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the green grass and colorful plants and flowers.

Maybe it's to be expected this time of year, but lately I've been reading more about being thankful to God and how important that is. This is something I try to do on a regular basis, but the times when I need it most are those dark, difficult times. I was reminded of this these last few days. I always have something for which I can give thanks to God and what an impact thanksgiving has on me--and all of us. It is really hard for me to explain with words. Being thankful seems to help me to take my focus off what I think is going wrong in my life, the difficulties, the struggles, the sadness, grief and despair. Instead, it helps me to focus on the good things that God is doing and has blessed me with. While circumstances may seem impossible and depressing I never really know how God is using the things that I see as unpleasant, painful and incredibly difficult for my good and even the good of many other people, too. This gives me peace and hope from God.

When I thought about giving thanks I thought of this photo. There are dark storm clouds that crowd this photo and could easily block the view, but if you pay attention and look beyond them you can see the pretty, pink sunset clouds and clear skies. When I focus on the small, beautiful clouds instead of the big, dark clouds it reminds me of being thankful for what I can see that is good, focusing on being thankful and it leaves me with peace and hope because I know God is with me and He is working.

What's this all about??

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
~1 Thessalonians 5:18

I have noticed several friends that daily list something they are thankful for during the days leading up to Thanksgiving. This gave me the idea to start a collection of pictures that reflect things that I am thankful for. This will be a simple project with no guidelines or "rules"...I will post pictures as frequently as it is possible for me to do so and am allowing myself to use pictures I have taken in the past or take new pictures. This is not just a "Thanksgiving thing" that I will quit on November 23--this is something I will continue to do all year long. The main idea behind this is to keep the photography side of this simple and focus more on the heart--applying 1 Thessalonians 5:18 and having a true spirit of thankfulness for all God has done for me and blessed me with.

Yes. I am thankful you are allowing God to work through you during this time. I am thankful you are acknowledging Him, His work, His way, in your life. When you are weak - He is strong! I am thankful you are setting your eyes, your focus, on things above. I am thankful you are turning everything into a blessing to Him. I am thankful for His very nature - that HE does not change, that HE does not lie. That we can know that His promises are true. I am thankful YOU know this too!! Continue throwing yourself into His everlasting arms.
